Airsoft battery: LiPo, chargers and accessories
Batteries power electric replicas. In the vast majority of cases these are AEGs, but solenoid-driven HPA systems also need one to operate their solenoid valve. This category covers LiPo and Li-ion batteries, chargers, connectors, fireproof bags and storage solutions, in a PEQ box or a stock extension.
LiPo, Li-ion or NiMH: which technology to choose
- LiPo: the standard in airsoft, about 95% of batteries sold. With no memory effect, it can be recharged whenever you like without losing capacity. However, never discharge it below 3 V per cell, and avoid storing it fully charged for long periods to preserve its lifespan.
- NiMH: an older technology, prone to memory effect. To keep its full capacity, it had to be fully drained and then fully recharged. It still comes with some entry-level replicas, supplied with their charger: we recommend replacing it with a LiPo.
- Li-ion: another lithium technology, built with rigid cells. It self-discharges more slowly, stores better and comes in high capacities (2,600 to 3,000 mAh for an AEG). On the other hand, its discharge rate is lower and it is heavier than a LiPo of the same capacity: it suits a stock AEG well, while LiPo remains the choice for a highly responsive replica.
Choosing a battery in four steps
Our method always follows the same order: the replica's connector (T-plug, mini Tamiya…), then the voltage it accepts (7.4 V or 11.1 V), then the capacity in mAh, limited by the space available in the stock or handguard, and finally the discharge rate. Each step is detailed on the LiPo and Li-ion batteries page.
Most common setup on an AEG assault replica: an 11.1 V 1,200 mAh LiPo fitted in the stock tube.
Batteries for HPA systems
Solenoid-driven HPA systems draw very little current. They use small 7.4 V HPA batteries of about 250 to 300 mAh, fitted with a JST connector. Mechanical systems, on the other hand, run without a battery.
Charging and storing batteries safely
A LiPo is fragile and can catch fire. Four rules limit the risk:
- Choose a recognized, certified brand. A lithium battery sold in Europe must carry the CE marking, and reputable brands have their batteries lab-tested, notably to the UN38.3 standard (short circuit, overcharge, impact, temperature). This is the case for Gens Ace, one of the leading brands. Saving a few euros on an uncertified battery creates a fire risk at home.
- Use a fireproof bag, for storage as well as charging. One bag holds several batteries, and some bags have flaps to pass the charger cable through.
- Disconnect the battery after every game. A connected replica draws a little current and ends up draining the battery, which destroys a LiPo.
- Watch for swelling. A swollen battery has reached the end of its life, often after long storage in the replica without being disconnected. It must be taken to a collection point, never thrown away with household waste. If you cannot drop it off right away, the Powair6 tip is to keep it away from other batteries, store it in a fireproof bag and take it to a dedicated collection point as soon as possible.

RC battery or airsoft battery?
With the right voltage and amperage, an airsoft battery can power another device. The reverse is not recommended. Airsoft batteries are designed for the dimensions and voltage of replicas, whereas batteries for RC planes, helicopters or cars often have different capacities and discharge rates.

Frequently asked questions
Which battery for an airsoft AEG replica?
A LiPo, with the same connector as the replica and the voltage it accepts: 11.1 V if it can handle it, otherwise 7.4 V. Then choose the highest capacity that fits in the battery compartment.
Can a NiMH battery be replaced with a LiPo?
Yes, it is even recommended. Just check the connector and the voltage the replica accepts before buying.
Do I need a specific charger for a LiPo battery?
Yes, a LiPo-compatible charger. Ideally, charge the battery inside a fireproof bag.
What should I do with a swollen LiPo battery?
Stop using it and take it to a collection and recycling point. Swelling means the battery has reached the end of its life.
Why disconnect the battery after a game?
A connected replica constantly draws a little current. Within a few weeks, the battery drains completely, and a LiPo that is fully discharged is permanently dead.
