The trade-off is that a GBBR requires regular maintenance (silicone on seals, barrel cleaning after each game) and attention to temperature (green gas loses performance below 10°C, while CO2 remains stable for longer). There are two main ways to adjust the power of a GBBR.
The first is the NPAS (Negative Pressure Air System). This internal valve controls how gas is distributed between the BB and the bolt. By reducing the amount of gas directed towards the BB, FPS is lowered, while gas not used for propulsion is redirected towards the bolt, increasing the kick felt in the shoulder. An NPAS therefore allows you to adjust both muzzle power and recoil intensity.
The second is choosing the right airsoft gas. Available gases range from around 100 to 200 PSI. The higher the PSI, the greater the potential FPS. However, this method remains dependent on outside temperature: in cold conditions, even high-PSI gas will still be affected by cooldown.

What is the difference between a GBBR assault rifle and an AEG on the field?
An AEG uses an electric motor and offers a high rate of fire with hi-cap magazines holding 300+ BBs. A GBBR runs on gas, features mechanical recoil and generally uses real-cap magazines holding around 30 to 40 BBs on an M4 platform. A GBBR requires more tactical ammunition management and provides a much more realistic shooting experience.
What gas should I use in a GBBR?
Green gas is commonly used as a general term for the different airsoft gases available. Some brands use names such as blue gas or red gas to identify different PSI (pressure) levels. Gas is suitable for most applications above 10°C. In cold weather, an HPA conversion using compressed air is the solution for consistent performance throughout the year.
How should you maintain a GBBR after a game?
A few simple steps are enough: clean the inner barrel with a cleaning rod, lubricate the bolt with a light grease, apply silicone oil to the magazine seals and check the hop-up. This only takes a few minutes after each session. Regular maintenance helps prevent leaks and keeps the replica performing consistently.
Does a GBBR work in cold weather?
With green gas, performance drops noticeably below 10°C because of the cooldown effect caused by gas expansion. There are two solutions: switch to a higher-pressure gas, although cooldown can still occur, or choose an HPA conversion, which completely eliminates temperature-related gas pressure issues.
Can a GBBR assault rifle be converted to HPA?
Yes. The conversion is performed through the magazine: a drill-free valve is compatible with around 70% of models, while the remaining 30% require machining (drilling and tapping) to install the valve. Mechanical blowback is retained, but the gas supply is replaced by a constant, adjustable compressed-air supply controlled through a regulator.
