A handguard (also referred to as a RIS or RAS) is the part that surrounds the outer barrel of an airsoft gun. On real firearms, its primary purpose is to act as a heat shield and prevent contact with the hot barrel. In airsoft, just like on real firearms, it also plays a central role: accessories such as flashlights, lasers, foregrips and bipods are mounted on the handguard, and its shape largely determines the ergonomics of the shooter's grip.
Depending on the type of handguard, accessories either attach directly to it (M-LOK® accessories, for example) or are mounted onto an intermediate Picatinny rail section (a slotted rail that serves as a universal mounting standard) installed where needed. The mounting system you choose therefore determines which accessories can be installed.
Many airsoft players choose a gun partly because of its handguard. However, there are several reasons why you may want to replace it:
Replacing a handguard is not always a simple operation. It requires the appropriate tools (vice, specific barrel nut wrench) and a good understanding of the mounting system. The barrel nut secures the outer barrel to the body of the airsoft gun, and the handguard is then attached over it. Each handguard manufacturer may use a different barrel nut with its own mounting system.
An important point: there are two main families of barrel nuts. AEG barrel nuts are designed for electric airsoft guns, while GBBR/RS barrel nuts use real-steel specifications. An AEG handguard cannot necessarily be fitted to a GBBR, and vice versa. If in doubt, our 6Labs workshop can check compatibility and handle the installation.
Three main standards coexist on the market. The right choice depends on the accessories you want to install and the airsoft gun you are using.
Note: removable rail sections (Picatinny, M-LOK® or KeyMod) can be installed on a handguard to create mounting points exactly where they are needed and at the desired length. This makes it possible to adapt a handguard to your individual setup without replacing the entire system.

What is the difference between Picatinny, M-LOK and KeyMod?
Picatinny is a continuous slotted rail system that is universal but relatively heavy. M-LOK uses slots machined directly into the handguard, allowing rail sections or accessories to be added only where needed, reducing overall weight. KeyMod works on a similar principle using keyhole-shaped slots, but it has gradually lost ground to M-LOK, which has become the dominant modular mounting standard.
How do I know if a handguard is compatible with my airsoft gun?
Compatibility primarily depends on the barrel nut. On an AEG, the barrel nut uses a specific thread standard. On a GBBR, it generally uses a real-steel-style thread. The two are not interchangeable. The handguard itself may remain similar, but the barrel nut and its thread determine whether it can be installed. The platform (M4, AK, HK416) and handguard manufacturer also matter, as each brand may use its own barrel nut and mounting system. How do you attach an accessory to an M-LOK handguard?
An M-LOK accessory fits into the slot and is secured by rotating a T-nut into position. No special tool is required. To install a Picatinny accessory on an M-LOK handguard, simply add an M-LOK rail section to create a short Picatinny mounting surface exactly where it is needed.
Do I need to change my handguard to install a scope or red dot sight?
No. Most optics are mounted on the upper receiver rail, not on the handguard. The handguard is mainly used for front-mounted accessories such as flashlights, lasers, foregrips and bipods. Replacing the handguard is useful if the original model has no suitable mounting points or if its profile does not suit your needs.
