Airsoft shotguns: the close-quarters pump-action
The pump-action shotgun gets its name from its mechanism: pumping the fore-end back and forth chambers a shell before every shot. In airsoft, it fires 3 or 6 BBs per shot (3-shot or 6-shot models) to create an effective spread at short range. Easy to use and highly realistic, it is a replica designed for CQB and indoor combat.
How an airsoft shotgun works
The shotgun stands apart from other replicas in how it is fed: it uses shells rather than a standard magazine. Each shell holds around 30 BBs and is swapped during the game, which adds a real touch of realism. Some models even eject the spent shells.
Most airsoft shotguns have 3 barrels, which create the spread of BBs. They have no blowback: it is the pumping action that readies each shot. The distinctive sound of racking the shotgun adds to the immersion.
Affordable and spectacular to use, the shotgun is also a popular replica with beginners.
Gas or spring shotguns: two families
For shotguns, we talk about gas or spring, not GBB: with no blowback, the term does not apply.
- Gas shotguns: the most realistic, both in sound and in multi-BB fire. A little more expensive, they deliver much better performance.
- Spring shotguns: harder to cock and less impressive, but far more affordable.
A small part of the range is also available in electric and HPA versions. In each family, shotguns come in short and long formats.
The best-known airsoft shotgun models
The M870 is the benchmark model. Popularized by Tokyo Marui, it has since been taken up by many brands. The M3 and the SPAS-12 are also among the classics, and Cyma is one of the most present manufacturers in this segment.
A few models step outside the classic pump-action mold: the Saiga-12, a semi-automatic blowback shotgun fed by a magazine, the AA-12, also semi-automatic, and the KSG, a manual pump-action with a modern design and two loading tubes.

Fixed hop-up and BB weight: the range myth
Shotguns have a reputation for lacking range because they have no hop-up. In reality, they have a fixed hop-up. With 3 barrels, it is hard to fit 3 adjustable hop-up units into this format, something only a few electric shotguns manage.
With a fixed hop-up, the trajectory is corrected through the BB weight, which varies from one brand to another: 0.28 g usually suits a Tokyo Marui, while a Golden Eagle performs better with 0.30 or 0.32 g. Properly set up, a Tokyo Marui shotgun reaches 35 to 40 meters.
Less accurate than an assault replica, the shotgun is not built for precision: its role is to cover a close area, such as a room, with the best possible chance of hitting.
Shotgun accessories and customization
A sling and a shell holder almost always go with a shotgun. The shell holder can be worn as a bandolier, on the sling or directly on the replica. In dimly lit buildings, a light is a real plus. A sight, on the other hand, is not necessary: you shoot instinctively, and a red dot is mostly for looks.
Customization options remain limited. Internal upgrade parts are rare, as the mechanism is complex and precision is not the goal. The range focuses on reinforcement and reliability parts. Externally, popular series such as the M870 offer a few more options (stock, accessories), without matching the choice available for an M4.

Frequently asked questions
Is an airsoft shotgun less accurate than other replicas?
Yes, and that is by design. The shotgun fires a spread of 3 or 6 BBs to maximize the chance of hitting at short range. It is built to cover a close area, not for precision shooting.
What is the difference between a gas shotgun and a spring shotgun?
A gas shotgun is the most realistic and the best performing, for a slightly higher price. A spring shotgun takes more effort to cock and is less impressive, but remains far more affordable.
How many BBs does a shotgun shell hold?
Around 30 BBs. Shells are swapped and reloaded during the game.
Why is a shotgun's hop-up fixed?
Most shotguns have 3 barrels, and it is hard to fit 3 adjustable hop-up units into this format. The trajectory is therefore corrected through the BB weight.
Which BB weight should I use in a shotgun?
It depends on the brand: 0.28 g for a Tokyo Marui, 0.30 or 0.32 g for a Golden Eagle. A few tests will help you find the best trajectory.
Can a shotgun be used at very close range?
That is its specialty: the shotgun is a close-quarters replica, usually set below 1 joule. Always follow your field's rules on engagement distances.
