6 mm airsoft BBs: choosing the right ammo

An essential consumable for every game and for target practice alike, the airsoft BB directly affects your replica's performance and reliability. Three criteria guide the choice: the type of BB (bio, plastic or tracer), the weight and the manufacturing quality.

Bio, plastic or tracer BBs: what are the differences?

  • Bio BBs: long considered fragile, biodegradable BBs now perform on par with plastic BBs. Certified models, notably by TÜV, reach over 90% biodegradability under laboratory conditions (ISO 14855 standard). How fast they then break down depends on the ground: faster in woodland than on a hard surface. Many fields and clubs now require them.
  • Plastic BBs: not biodegradable, they remain the most affordable option. They are mostly used for indoor target practice, where BBs are collected after use.
  • Tracer BBs: available in bio or plastic, they glow when they pass through an ultraviolet tracer unit, built into a suppressor or a hop-up unit. The trajectory stays visible over 50 to 70 meters, a real asset for night games or low-light conditions.

In terms of price, non-tracer plastic BBs are the entry level, followed by bio BBs, tracer BBs, and then bio tracer BBs.

Which airsoft BB weight to choose?

Airsoft BB weights range from 0.12 g to 0.50 g, and each weight is available in bio, plastic or tracer versions.

Weight Use
0.12 g Grenades, very rarely used in games
0.20 g Once the reference weight for chrono checks, rarely used in games today
0.25 to 0.32 g Everyday use; 0.28, 0.30 and 0.32 g are the most popular
0.36 g and above Heavy BBs for DMR and sniper replicas

At equal quality, a heavier BB is more accurate. A replica's power, expressed in joules, depends on both the BB's velocity (in FPS) and its weight: at constant power, a heavier BB simply leaves the barrel more slowly. All weights are compatible with the same replica.

Airsoft BB quality: why tolerance matters

The standard diameter of an airsoft BB is 5.95 mm, slightly smaller than the inner barrel (usually 6.03 to 6.08 mm) to let air through. A BB's quality is measured by its tolerance: the gap between the stated diameter and the actual diameter. The smaller and more consistent that gap from one BB to the next, the more consistent the trajectory.

A poor-quality BB, too large, badly calibrated or too soft, can deform when fired, jam in the barrel and damage the internals (nozzle, gears, tappet plate). Choosing a BB from a recognized brand remains the best protection for your replica, especially for a first purchase.

Taiwanese factories are known for the precision of their calibration, as illustrated by BLS. Note that at some brands, such as ASG, the entry-level and high-end ranges do not come from the same factory.

Common myths about airsoft BBs

  • The BB determines range: not for a standard-quality BB, which does not affect the replica's performance. A poor-quality BB, on the other hand, reduces range and accuracy.
  • Color does not matter: white BBs remain the most visible in daylight. A gray BB, more discreet, makes the trajectory harder for the opponent to spot.

Packaging and storage

Airsoft BBs come in bags, the most affordable option, and in bottles, which are more practical and better suited to storage. The price per kilo drops with volume: 5 and 10 kg packs suit clubs and teams buying together.

To keep their qualities, BBs should be stored in a dry place, away from heat and humidity, in an airtight container. Humidity makes BBs swell, bio BBs in particular. It is best to use them within a year of opening, and to discard any BB in doubtful condition rather than risk a replica breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an airsoft BB?

An airsoft BB measures 5.95 mm in diameter. This gap with the inner barrel, usually 6.03 to 6.08 mm, lets air through.

Which airsoft BB weight should I choose?

0.28 to 0.32 g BBs are the most widely used today. The 0.20 g serves as the chrono reference, and BBs of 0.36 g and above are intended for sniper and DMR replicas.

Are bio BBs as good as plastic BBs?

Yes. Good-quality biodegradable BBs now offer equivalent performance. Their price, slightly higher, is getting closer to that of plastic BBs.

How long does a bio BB take to break down?

It depends on the ground and conditions: breakdown is faster in woodland than on a hard surface. TÜV certification confirms a biodegradability rate above 90% under laboratory conditions.

How should I store airsoft BBs?

In a dry place, away from humidity and heat, in a tightly sealed bag or bottle. Use them within a year of opening.
