Airsoft rifle scopes: magnification, objective lens and mounting

A rifle scope is the optic that magnifies the image, unlike a red dot, which simply projects an illuminated dot. As soon as a sight magnifies, even from 1.1x, it counts as a magnified optic. It is the gear of sniper and DMR players, who engage at range and need to identify their target before firing.

Reading a scope rating: 3-9x40, 4x32, 1-6x24

A scope rating gives two pieces of information. The first number is the magnification, the second is the objective lens diameter in millimeters.

  • 4x32: fixed 4x magnification, 32 mm objective lens.
  • 3-9x40: variable magnification from 3x to 9x, 40 mm objective lens.

The larger the objective lens, the wider the field of view and the brighter the image. The trade-off is a bulkier scope.

Which magnification for airsoft

In airsoft, engagement distances are limited, and so is useful magnification. 2x to 4x covers the vast majority of needs. 8x or 10x models exist, but they bring less on the field: seeing an opponent at 200 meters does not mean you can hit them.

Two main families make up the range:

  • Fixed-magnification scopes (4x32, 4x40): simple, light and rugged. The magnification is set when you buy it.
  • Variable-magnification scopes (3-9x40, 4-16x44, 6-24x50): they adapt to the engagement distance, at the cost of a little extra weight.

There are also more specific formats: short scopes, shortened to reduce weight and bulk, short dots or low-power variable optics (LPVO: 1-4, 1-6, 1-8), designed to switch from close quarters to long range, and combo optics with a small red dot mounted on top.

Scope, red dot or magnifier?

  • A rifle scope magnifies the image and is used to engage at range.
  • A red dot does not magnify: it is used for fast target acquisition, in CQB and at medium range.
  • A magnifier sits behind a red dot to zoom in on it, with no reticle of its own.

Note that a scope cannot be mounted on a pistol: handgun replicas only accept red dots.

Mounting and protection

A scope attaches to the replica with scope rings, 25 or 30 mm depending on the tube diameter. Check this value on the product page before ordering your rings. Rings, risers and mounts are grouped in the mounts and supports category, which also includes optic protectors.

Protection matters in airsoft: a BB breaks an expensive scope as easily as an entry-level one. Manufacturers of optics for real firearms do not reinforce the front lens, since that is not a problem they have to solve.

One last point, true of any optic: zeroing is essential after purchase. No scope comes aligned with your replica.

Frequently asked questions

What does 3-9x40 mean on a rifle scope?

The first number is the magnification, here variable from 3x to 9x. The second is the objective lens diameter, here 40 mm. A larger objective lens gives a wider field of view.

Which magnification is best for airsoft?

2x to 4x covers most situations. Beyond that, the benefit drops: airsoft engagement distances do not let you make use of 10x.

What is the difference between a rifle scope and a red dot?

A scope magnifies the image to engage at range. A red dot does not magnify: it projects an illuminated dot and is used for fast aiming at short and medium range.

Which scope rings should I choose?

It depends on your scope's tube diameter, usually 25 or 30 mm. You will find it on the optic's product page.

Can you mount a rifle scope on an airsoft pistol?

No. Handgun replicas only accept red dots, fitted on a model-specific mounting plate.
