Airsoft silencers: choosing the right thread and model

An airsoft silencer screws onto the end of the outer barrel to reduce firing noise, but it has also become a styling element in its own right. This category brings together silencers, tracer silencers, flash hiders and the thread adapters needed to fit them.

What does an airsoft silencer do?

On a replica, the noise to muffle is the air escaping from the inner barrel. The more powerful the replica, the louder that burst of air. A silencer reduces it, but it will never remove the sound of the internals, which remains audible. Most models only reduce noise slightly, while a well-designed silencer reduces it noticeably.

This noise reduction comes from the foam inside the tube. Be careful: many silencers are sold without foam and are then purely cosmetic. On every Powair6 product page, this information is listed in the specifications, under "Foam inside".

Silencers are found on sniper replicas, where stealth matters, as well as on assault replicas and pistols, where they mainly add style. Their only drawback: they make the replica longer.

14 mm CCW or CW thread: the number one compatibility point

This is the main source of mistakes when buying. Two separate pieces of information must match between your outer barrel and your silencer.

1. Thread diameter

  • 14 mm: the standard, found on almost all AEGs.
  • 11 mm: a narrower diameter, used on some replicas, especially pistols.
  • Up to 24 mm: larger diameters, found on some sniper rifles and some AKs. Less common, they remain a special case.

2. Thread direction

  • CCW (counterclockwise), written 14 mm-: the most common direction in airsoft.
  • CW (clockwise), written 14 mm+: less common.

Direction is independent of diameter: a 14 mm thread exists in both CCW and CW. A CCW outer barrel needs a CCW silencer, and vice versa. When the two do not match, or when you want to fit a 14 mm silencer on an 11 mm pistol, an adapter bridges the gap. It is sometimes included, sometimes sold separately.

The pre-purchase checklist: your outer barrel's thread diameter, its thread direction, whether the silencer has foam, and whether you need an adapter. Once you have it, screw the silencer on straight: if it sits crooked, BBs hit the inner wall and end up breaking.

Tracer silencers: the best-selling model

A large share of airsoft silencers are actually tracer silencers. A built-in tracer unit charges tracer BBs as they pass through, making their trajectory glow, a real asset for night games. Some models add a chronograph function.

Manufacturers such as Acetech and e-shooter even use the word "silencer" for these units, which look like silencers without working as one. You can also combine both, with some foam and a tracer unit in the same tube.

Flash hiders and amplifiers

Flash hiders mount in the same place, with the same thread constraints. The category also includes amplifiers, which do the exact opposite of a silencer: their cone amplifies the firing noise to impress the opponent.

Length, material and style

Length and outer diameter are the first selection criteria, along with the finish: CNC machining, engravings, colors. The range goes from short models of around 90 mm to XXL versions of nearly 40 cm. Carbon has been popular for a few years for its light weight, and Silverback carbon silencers are among the best sellers: well designed, supplied with their foam and fairly priced for the material.

A silencer also offers another option: housing a longer precision barrel. You lose some of the noise reduction, but a longer barrel mechanically increases power, without changing the outer barrel or visibly lengthening the replica.

Common myths about airsoft silencers

  • An airsoft silencer makes the replica silent: no. It reduces the burst of air at the muzzle, but the internals remain audible.
  • A silencer reduces power: no again. As long as the BB touches neither the foam nor the wall, power is unchanged. It does not add power either, except by lengthening the inner barrel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 14 mm CCW and a 14 mm CW thread?

The diameter is the same: only the thread direction changes. CCW means counterclockwise, written 14 mm-, and CW means clockwise, written 14 mm+. CCW is the most common in airsoft.

How do I know if a silencer has foam?

This information is listed in the product page specifications, under "Foam inside". Without foam, the silencer is purely cosmetic.

Does an airsoft silencer really reduce noise?

Partly. It reduces the noise of the air leaving the barrel, all the more so if it contains foam and is well designed. However, the noise of the replica's internals remains audible.

How do I fit a silencer on an airsoft pistol?

Most pistols use an 11 mm thread, while most silencers are 14 mm. A thread adapter bridges the two.

What is a tracer silencer?

It is a silencer with a built-in tracer unit. It charges tracer BBs as they are fired and makes their trajectory glow, which is especially useful in night games.
